Kemi is a journalist, writer, traveler, researcher, an all-round creative soul and a friend of TwentySix. What we love most about her is her curiosity and adventurous spirit. Her bold and unique sense of style also scores very cool points in our book. Her work as a journalist focuses on mental health, intergenerational complexities, social justice, the intersections between private and public memory and has been published in Al Jazeera, Catapult, The Guardian UK, Electric Literature, Africa is a Country, The Rumpus, SciDevNet, The Republic, Saraba Magazine<\/em> and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start from the top<\/strong>\u2014when did you first fall in love with writing and how did you come to it as a career ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I discovered my love for words in secondary school. I read romance and mystery novels. I started writing when I was in university. I had a blog. I was studying Microbiology and knew since my first year that I wasn\u2019t going to practice. But I wasn\u2019t sure I could earn a living writing. It was in 2019, I think, that I fully realized that a writing life was possible. Though it still feels quite precarious.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Do you remember the first book you read? Tell us about it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t remember. Maybe the Bible? There was also this little book about a boy\u2014Etim?\u2014who got lost in the market. I felt his fear and confusion, wandering in the crowd like that, searching for his mother. He must have felt lost in the world. And I\u2019ve experienced that maybe twice in my life. I felt utterly lost in the world. It was scary, disorienting. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We love to encourage self expression and showing up for yourself<\/strong>\u2014can you tell us how you express yourself through your style?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, my style has evolved over the years. I\u2019ve had different phases\u2014big hair, mild goth… I wear whatever I like, really. I like being comfortable. With myself and in my space. There\u2019s so much to explore. I need my account balance to match my desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When do you feel most like yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love when it\u2019s raining and I\u2019m cuddled up with a book and listening to film scores. Or when I\u2019m doing work that resonates with me. Or when I feel so full, so drunk in love with myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give us a short quote from something you\u2019ve read that resonates so with you  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s this little poem called \u201cLate Fragment\u201d by Raymond Carver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd did you get what<\/em><\/p>

you wanted from this life, even so?<\/em><\/p>

I did.<\/em><\/p>

And what did you want?<\/em><\/p>

To call myself beloved, to feel myself<\/em><\/p>

beloved on the earth.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That poem has stayed with me for many years. I randomly say to myself, \u201cMe too, Carver. I call myself beloved. I feel myself beloved on the earth.\u201d Even on the days that I don\u2019t feel like it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

How or where do you find inspiration?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books. Twitter. Film. Water. Music. Taking long walks. Reading literary interviews. Conversations with friends. Conversations with strangers. Stuff happening in the streets. I try to capture something\u2014albeit random\u2014every day. It helps me to be more present in my life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve recently started exploring another creative outlet<\/strong>\u2014photography. How did that come to be? Do you have other creative outlets?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always been interested in images\u2014photography and film. But I started paying attention a few months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve tried my hands at a couple of things. And I have several interests. Sometimes I imagine in an alternate life, I\u2019d be a hair artist and a painter and a writer and a psychiatrist and a mixologist and a neuroscientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this life, though, I\u2019m a storyteller. And I plan to explore it in whatever form that interests me\u2014journalism, creative writing, photography, tech, film, advertising. My primary outlet is writing. There\u2019s so much to learn and I\u2019m open. Ultimately, my ambition is to live all my lives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you were to walk the runway for a fashion show, what music would be playing in the background?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Ludovico Einaudi piece<\/a>. Especially \u201cExperience.\u201d Nina Simone\u2019s \u201cFeeling Good<\/a>.\u201d The Cinematic Orchestra\u2019s \u201cArrival of Birds.\u201d<\/a> And whatever a collaboration between Asa and Sona Jobarteh sounds like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
